"When are you chatting with the band?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have publicly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Recognition

The band are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed confidence required a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
